Our Window Frame Painting Process
1. Moisture Testing and Assessment
We test all timber with a moisture meter before starting. Frames must read below 15% moisture. We also check for rot, lead paint, failing adhesion, and glazing compound condition. Everything is flagged and agreed before work begins.
2. Protection
Masking film on glass panes. Dust sheets on sills and surrounding areas. Dust extraction during sanding. No mess left behind.
3. Surface Preparation
Frames are sanded from coarse to fine grade. Failed or excessive paint is stripped back. Rot is cut out and filled with two-part epoxy filler. Knots are treated with knotting solution. Failed glazing compound is raked out and replaced before priming.
4. Primer Selection
Different surfaces need different primers. Oil-based for bare hardwood and resinous softwoods. Adhesion primers for UPVC or previously varnished surfaces. Stain-blocking primer for knotty Victorian pine. We match the primer to the substrate.
5. Finish Coats
At least two finish coats on all surfaces. Brush-applied on mouldings, glazing bars, and detail areas. We work in suitable weather and allow full drying time between coats.
6. Handover
