Plasterboard Painting in Preston

Rose Decor paint new plasterboard surfaces across Preston and Lancashire. We cover extension walls, loft conversions, partition walls, and newly boarded rooms. We apply the correct mist coat and preparation process so the finish holds properly.
As painters and decorators in Preston, we cover:
- New plasterboard in extensions and conversions
- Loft conversions — walls, ceilings, and knee walls
- Internal partition walls in renovated rooms
- Sealing and priming new plaster before finish coats
- Mist coat application to prevent flashing and uneven sheen
Plasterboard painting is one of the most technically specific areas of interior decorating. The mist coat stage is what prevents flashing and uneven sheen — we do not skip it.

Plasterboard Painting Services in Preston
New plasterboard and freshly skimmed surfaces require a specific preparation process. Here is how we approach the most common project types.
The Mist Coat — Why It Matters
Bare plasterboard is highly porous. If full-strength emulsion is applied directly, the surface absorbs the water content unevenly — the result is flashing, where patches of different sheen levels appear across the wall.
The correct process is a mist coat first: emulsion diluted with water (typically 10–20% water to paint ratio), applied thinly to seal the board and equalise absorbency. On a properly sealed surface, two finish coats produce a flat, consistent result across the entire wall.
Extension Walls and New Plasterboard
New rear extensions on Preston’s Victorian terraces — common in Deepdale, Ashton, and Ribbleton — often have plasterboard on the internal faces of the new structure. We assess drying time before starting. Painting a surface still releasing moisture causes adhesion failure and blistering.
The junction between new extension walls and existing original walls often involves two different surface types. New skim plaster gets a mist coat. Lime plaster gets a breathable primer. We do not apply the same product to both.
Loft Conversions
Loft conversions across Fulwood, Penwortham, and Ribbleton typically involve plasterboard walls and ceilings on angled rafters and knee walls. Knee walls are awkward and end up in a different light environment — a consistent mist coat across all surfaces ensures even sheen throughout.
MDF or timber boarding sometimes appears in loft conversions for built-in storage. MDF requires an oil-based or specialist MDF primer — not standard emulsion. We work on loft conversions as a complete project: mist coat, preparation, two finish coats, and woodwork throughout. For ceiling finishes across the rest of the property, see our ceiling painting page.

Partition Walls and Full Renovation Projects

Partition Walls in Open-Plan Conversions
Preston’s interwar semis in Penwortham and Lea are frequently opened up to create kitchen-diner spaces. Where a new plasterboard stud wall has been fitted, that surface needs the same mist coat process as any other new skim work.
Where original walls on either side have been cut into, patched, or re-plastered during building work, the patches will behave differently from the surrounding surface without correct priming. We address each area individually.
Sealing New Plaster Throughout
In any renovation where multiple rooms have been newly plastered, we apply mist coats consistently across all new surfaces before beginning finish coats. This is the preparation stage — without it, finish coats will not perform as intended.
Where we are taking over from another decorator or working alongside other trades, we check the preparation status of every surface before applying finish coats.
How We Approach Plasterboard Painting
1. Free Quote
We visit the property, assess all new plasterboard and skim surfaces, and confirm drying times. You receive a clear price before any work begins.
2. Surface Assessment
We check each surface for moisture content and readiness. New plaster must be fully dry before decoration starts. We identify any areas of lime plaster, MDF, or mixed surface types.
3. Mist Coat Application
We apply a diluted emulsion mist coat across all new plasterboard and skim surfaces. This seals the substrate and equalises absorbency across the entire wall.
4. Drying and Preparation
The mist coat is left to dry fully — typically within a few hours for smaller rooms. Edges and trims are masked. Any surface defects are filled and sanded before proceeding.
5. First Finish Coat
The first full-strength finish coat is applied by roller and brush. We cut in cleanly at ceilings, trims, and corners before rolling the main field.
6. Second Finish Coat and Completion
A second finish coat is applied for full, consistent coverage. Woodwork is completed in satinwood or eggshell. We clean up fully and walk through the finished rooms with you.

Plasterboard Painting Costs in Preston
Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 01772 211 886 for a precise quote.
Single Room
A single plasterboard room with mist coat plus two finish coats typically costs £350–£650. This covers walls and ceiling in a standard bedroom or similar sized space.
Loft Conversion
Full loft conversion decoration — including raked ceilings, knee walls, MDF primer where needed, and woodwork throughout — typically ranges from £700–£1,400. The raked ceilings add significant surface area compared to a standard room.
Extension or Open-Plan Room
Extension walls combined with an existing room typically cost £400–£900. If new plasterboard meets original lime plaster walls, the different surface types are priced as part of the same project.
Factors That Affect Cost
Surface area, drying time, and woodwork scope all affect the final price. Loft conversions with raked ceilings have significantly more surface area per floor plan than standard rooms. Skirting boards, door frames, and built-in storage add to the overall price.
