UPVC Conservatory Frameworks

UPVC is the most common conservatory material on Preston’s 1990s and 2000s housing. Estates across Penwortham, Fulwood, and Leyland were built with UPVC conservatories as standard additions. Almost all were white. That white ages poorly — it yellows, gathers green algae at the joints, and loses brightness after a decade of Lancashire’s wet winters.

Spraying a UPVC conservatory uses the same technical process as spraying window frames. All glazing panels and roof sections are fully masked before work begins. The surface is cleaned, degreased, and lightly abraded. A specialist UPVC adhesion primer is applied before the finish coats. The result is a factory-quality finish in any RAL colour.

Aluminium Conservatory Frames

Older conservatories often have aluminium frames — particularly the Victorian-style structures fitted in the late 1980s and early 1990s in Fulwood and Ashton-on-Ribble. Aluminium requires a different primer to UPVC and additional masking care.

Rose Decor uses an aluminium-compatible primer before the finish coats. Where the aluminium has oxidised or developed surface pitting, these areas are addressed during preparation. The additional primer and masking work is reflected in the quote.

Timber Conservatory Frames

Some period properties across Preston’s Victorian and Edwardian streets in Ashton-on-Ribble and around Avenham Park have timber lean-to conservatories. Timber requires cleaning, light sanding, filling minor splits or knot holes, exterior wood primer, and a durable exterior wood finish.

A well-maintained timber frame can be repainted successfully many times over. The prep time is longer than UPVC. On an older property, the result is often more appropriate than installing modern UPVC.

Dwarf Walls and Surrounding Brickwork

Most conservatories sit on a dwarf wall. Painting only the UPVC frame and leaving an original red brick or magnolia dwarf wall can produce an unfinished result. Rose Decor can paint the dwarf wall brickwork or render as part of the conservatory project, bringing the whole structure into the new colour scheme.

Colour Options

Any RAL colour is available for UPVC and aluminium frameworks. RAL 7016 anthracite grey is by far the most requested. RAL 9005 jet black suits more modern properties. RAL 7015 slate grey is softer and suits older brick-built properties. RAL 6009 heritage green is growing in popularity on interwar semis in Fulwood and Ashton.

Rose Decor advises on colour before starting — this matters most when matching to existing window frames or a recently painted front door. For whole-property UPVC colour changes including windows, fascias, and soffits, see our UPVC painting service.

Our Conservatory Painting Process

1. Assessment

We inspect all UPVC or aluminium surfaces for chips, failed seals, or damage. Any issues that would affect the outcome are flagged before work starts.

2. Cleaning and Degreasing

All surfaces cleaned to remove mould, oxidation, chalk, and contamination. This stage determines whether the primer bonds — it cannot be rushed.

3. Masking

Every pane of glass, roof panel, and adjacent surface fully masked. A conservatory has a large glazing area — proper masking is the most time-consuming and most important part of the job.

4. Priming

Specialist UPVC adhesion primer applied to all abraded surfaces and allowed to cure fully before top coats.

5. Spray Application

Two finish coats applied by spray gun. Each coat assessed before the next. Final coat inspected in good light before masking is removed.

6. Inspection and Sign-Off

Masking removed, all surfaces inspected at close range. Touch-ups completed before we leave.

Conservatory Painting Costs in Preston

Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 01772 211 886 for a precise quote.

Typical Price Ranges

Small lean-to conservatory (UPVC frame only): £350–£550. Standard 3m × 4m UPVC conservatory (Penwortham or Fulwood semi): £450–£750. Large Victorian-style structure (period property, Ashton-on-Ribble): £700–£1,100. Aluminium conservatory (add for specialist primer): £100–£200 additional.

What Affects the Cost

Conservatory size — bay width, number of roof bars, and door and vent count all affect the masking and painting time. Material — UPVC is standard; aluminium requires a different primer and additional preparation time.

Combined bookings reduce the cost per item. Where windows, fascias, or soffits are being done at the same time, setup, masking, and mobilisation costs are shared. Many Preston homeowners combine conservatory painting with a full UPVC colour change when refreshing the whole exterior.
