Pebbledash Painting in Preston

Pebbledash painting in Preston by Rose Decor — detached house with white render, red brick lower section and block-paved driveway

Rose Decor are pebbledash painting specialists in Preston, Lancashire. Pebbledash is everywhere across Preston’s suburbs — the interwar semis in Fulwood and Ashton-on-Ribble, the 1950s and 1960s estates in Ribbleton and Ingol. A huge proportion of Lancashire’s housing stock is pebbledashed.

As painters and decorators in Preston, we cover Preston and the surrounding Lancashire area.

  • Pebbledash upper storeys — the most common configuration on interwar semis
  • Full-house pebble dash — larger coat coverage, all elevations
  • Biological growth treatment — moss and algae on north-facing pebbledash
  • Repair work before painting — loose pebbles, detached sections, cracking
  • Colour changes — dramatic before-and-after results on painted pebble dash

Why Choose Rose Decor

Right Tools for the Texture

Long-pile masonry rollers and thick-bodied masonry paint — the correct equipment for pebbledash, not a smooth-render kit.

Specialist Preparation

Mould treatment, loose pebble repair, and masking all completed before the first coat is applied.

Preston’s Pebbledash Experts

We specialise in pebbledash across the city’s most common exterior surface — not as a side service.

10–15 Year Lifespan

Properly prepared and painted pebbledash lasts a decade or more in Lancashire’s wet climate.

Painting Pebble Dash: Why It Is Different

The Surface and What It Takes

Pebbledash is not a forgiving surface to paint. The pebbles create a rough, irregular texture. The surface area is much larger than smooth render or brick, meaning considerably more paint is used per square metre. Standard short-pile rollers cannot work paint into the crevices between stones.

Rose Decor uses long-pile masonry rollers and thick-bodied exterior masonry paints. The process is slower and more material-intensive than smooth surfaces, but the result is full, even coverage across every crevice.

Washing and Treating the Surface

Pebbledash accumulates biological growth more readily than smooth render. North-facing elevations in Preston’s damper suburban streets — particularly across Ribbleton, Brookfield, and parts of Penwortham — often show green and black staining across large areas.

A mould treatment wash is applied before any painting begins on affected surfaces. Painting over moss or algae traps biological material under the paint film and causes early paint lifting. All windows, doors, sills, and surrounding brickwork are masked before the first coat. Pebbledash splatter is difficult to remove from window glass and UPVC.

Partial Pebbledash: Upper Storey

Most pebbledash painting enquiries in Preston come from properties with pebbledash on the upper storey only. This is the classic interwar semi configuration: brick or rendered lower storey with pebbledash above, separated by a string course. It is extremely common across Fulwood, Ashton-on-Ribble, and Longridge.

Reaching the upper storey requires ladder access or, for detached and larger semi-detached homes, a scaffold tower. Rose Decor arranges access equipment as part of the quote.

Pebbledash Repairs Before Painting

Over time, areas of pebbledash detach or become loose. This happens gradually on older properties and is often not noticed until the surface is inspected. Detached sections need to be repaired before paint is applied — painting over loose pebbledash seals a problem in rather than solving it.

Rose Decor inspects the surface during the free quote visit. Minor repairs are handled as part of the painting job. Where significant render sections have failed, we advise on the extent of repair work before quoting.

Colour Changes and the Before-and-After

Pebbledash colour changes produce some of the most dramatic exterior transformations possible. A 1930s semi with dull grey or cream pebbledash repainted in a clean white or warm heritage tone looks like a different property. Properly prepared pebbledash can last 10–15 years.

The most popular choices are clean whites, warm creams, and light grey. For smooth rendered walls on the same property, see our render painting service. Many homeowners completing a colour change also update their garage door — see our garage door painting service.

How We Paint Pebbledash

1. Survey

We inspect the pebbledash surface for loose sections, biological growth, and overall condition. We photograph the property and confirm the scope during the free quote.

2. Wash and Treat

The surface is washed to remove dirt and contamination. Biological growth is treated with mould treatment and allowed to work before proceeding.

3. Repair

Any loose pebbles or small detached sections are re-pointed or filled with exterior filler. Significant repairs are identified and advised on separately.

4. Masking

All windows, doors, sills, brickwork, and surrounding surfaces are masked to prevent splatter.

5. First and Second Coat

Paint applied with long-pile masonry rollers and brushes, working into every crevice. Two coats are standard; a third is applied on significant colour changes.

Typical Price Ranges

3-bed terrace — pebbledash upper half only: £550–£900. 3-bed semi, Fulwood or Ashton-on-Ribble — pebbledash throughout: £800–£1,500. 4-bed detached — fully pebbledashed: £1,200–£2,200. Scaffold tower hire (if required): £200–£400 additional.

What Affects the Cost

Extent of coverage — upper half only is significantly less work and material than full-house pebbledash. Surface condition — heavy biological growth, detached pebbles, or significant staining adds preparation time before the first coat can go on.

Paint quantity — pebbledash consumes more paint per square metre than smooth surfaces. This is a real materials cost factored into the quote.
