Our Fence Painting Process
Step 1 — Inspection
Rose Decor checks for rot, loose panels, broken rails, and existing product. Boards too far gone to paint are flagged. Product type is decided based on timber age and condition.
Step 2 — Cleaning
The fence is pressure washed or scrubbed with sugar soap. Where green algae or black mould is present — common on north-facing or shaded fences in Preston — a biocide treatment is applied and left to dwell before rinsing. Painting over live mould causes early failure.
Step 3 — Drying
Timber must be dry before any product is applied. Rose Decor allows a minimum of two to three days of dry weather after cleaning. We monitor the forecast and do not apply product to damp timber.
Step 4 — Preparation
Rough or splintered sections are sanded smooth. Knots and resinous areas are spot-primed where needed. Flaking old paint is removed, not overcoated.
Step 5 — Application
Depending on fence type and product, Rose Decor uses brush, roller, or low-pressure spray. Spray is fastest for long runs and produces an even finish, but requires careful masking. One to two coats are applied based on product spec and timber absorbency.
Step 6 — Tidy Up
Masking is removed, work areas cleared, and the garden left as found. Lawns, borders, and furniture near the fence line are protected throughout.

Fence Painting Costs in Preston
Important: Prices below are estimates only. Every fence is different. For a precise quote, call 01772 211 886.

Standard Garden Fence
12–15 metres of closeboard panel fencing: approximately £200–£450, including cleaning, preparation, and one to two coats. Poor condition fences requiring extra prep or biocide treatment fall toward the higher end.
Picket Fence
Front garden, 8–12 metres: approximately £150–£300. Picket fencing takes longer per metre because all surfaces of each upright need painting.
Garden Gate
Approximately £60–£120 as an addition to a fence quote. Standalone gate painting is available on request. Key factors affecting price include fence length, height, access, timber condition, number of coats, and product type.
Costs depend on fence length, height, condition, number of coats, and whether mould treatment is needed. For related outdoor timber work, see our deck painting and staining page.

Types of Fences We Paint in Preston
Rose Decor works on all common fence types found across Preston’s residential areas — from Victorian terraces to modern estates.
Closeboard and Featherboard Panel Fencing
The most common fence type across Preston’s terraces — particularly in Ashton, Ribbleton, Deepdale, and Plungington. These are typically treated with a penetrating wood stain rather than paint, allowing the timber to breathe without cracking. Rose Decor cleans thoroughly, treats any mould with biocide, and applies one to two coats suited to the timber’s condition.
Picket Fencing
Front garden picket fences are common in Fulwood, Penwortham, and Lea — particularly on Edwardian and 1930s semis. These fences are more visible and benefit from careful preparation and a solid painted finish, typically white, cream, or a heritage colour. Because every surface of each upright is painted, they take longer per metre — but the kerb appeal impact is significant.
Horizontal Slat Fencing
Popular on modern estates in Cottam and Ingol, horizontal slat fences suit contemporary gardens and are usually finished in dark tones — slate grey, anthracite, or black. Factory treatment needs periodic renewal. Rose Decor advises whether overpainting is appropriate or whether a fresh application of the original treatment stain is the better call.
Post-and-Rail Fencing
Found on properties on Preston’s rural outskirts — Grimsargh, Longridge, and the Ribble Valley fringe. These require a different approach: typically a creosote-substitute oil or deeply penetrating exterior treatment stain. Rose Decor uses products suited to agricultural-style fencing that provide long-term protection without an overly decorative finish.
Garden Gates
Back gates and side gates are painted alongside the fence as a unified finish. Most Preston terraced rows have back alleyways, and the gate is the first surface visitors encounter.
Rose Decor includes gates within fence painting quotes wherever relevant. For standalone gate work, see our front door painting page.

Whatever your fence type, Rose Decor uses the right product and technique to protect and improve its appearance.
Paint vs. Stain for Garden Fences
Both work — they work differently. The right choice depends on your fence type, age, and the finish you want.

Fence Paint
Paint forms a surface film over the timber. It delivers a solid colour, hides the wood grain, and provides a durable protective layer once dry.
Best for older or weathered timber, picket fences, and garden gates. Recoat every two to four years in Lancashire’s climate.
Fence Stain and Treatment
Stain penetrates the timber rather than forming a surface film. Because it becomes part of the wood, it cannot peel. The grain remains visible, giving a natural finish.
Best for pressure-treated softwood panels, new fences, and horizontal slat designs. Recoat every three to five years.
Pressure-Treated Timber
Yes, you can paint over pressure-treated timber — but timing matters. Most new fence panels need six to twelve months to weather before paint or stain bonds properly.
Rose Decor carries specialist adhesion primer for treated timber where needed. If you are unsure, we will assess it during the quote.

Why Preston Fences Need Regular Painting
Preston sees over 155 rainy days a year and more than 1,000mm of annual rainfall. That sustained wet weather takes a serious toll on unprotected timber.
Moisture and Mould
Persistent damp encourages algae, black mould, and wet rot — especially at panel bases where ground contact speeds up breakdown.
Freeze-Thaw Damage
Water enters micro-cracks in unpainted timber, freezes, and splits the wood. Only microporous, exterior-rated products hold up under these conditions.
UV Exposure
Lancashire summers are short, but UV still dries and brittles untreated timber — making it more porous heading into the wet season.

Left untreated, closeboard panel fencing typically deteriorates within five to seven years — requiring full replacement rather than a fresh coat. A fence painted every few years costs a fraction of panel replacement and improves how your garden looks.
Popular Fence Colours for Preston Gardens
The most popular fence colours across Preston depend on the property style and garden design.
- Natural wood tones (oak, pine, light brown): The default for a reason — they complement planting, look warm in summer, and age well
- Slate grey and anthracite: The most popular choice on newer estates in Cottam and Ingol. Dark fences recede visually, making smaller gardens feel larger
- White: Classic for picket fences and front boundaries on period properties in Fulwood and Penwortham. Highest maintenance, but the kerb appeal impact is significant
- Heritage tones (sage, slate blue, forest green): Growing in popularity as homeowners treat the garden as an extension of their interior design. Rose Decor can match to an existing palette
Many homeowners find it helpful to see colours on a small test section before committing to the full fence.
