Interior Wood Painting Services

Skirting Boards and Architraves

Skirting boards and architraves define the finish of a room. A poorly painted skirting — with visible brush marks, uneven sheen, or paint overrun onto the floor — undermines an otherwise well-decorated space.

We prepare all timber woodwork before painting: filling dents and nail holes, and sanding down raised grain and rough edges. On properties in Fulwood and Winckley Square, deep original skirting boards and detailed architrave profiles show every imperfection — we take time with the preparation.

We use oil-based eggshell or water-based satinwood on interior woodwork depending on the project. Oil-based eggshell gives a harder, more durable film. Water-based satinwood dries faster and has less odour — practical when the home is occupied throughout the work.

Bannisters and Handrails

Staircases in Preston’s Victorian and Edwardian terraces have turned softwood spindles, moulded newel posts, and hardwood or softwood handrails. These surfaces take daily contact and need a hard-wearing satinwood or eggshell finish that resists marking and wipes clean.

Painting bannisters and spindles requires patience. Each spindle has to be painted individually. We do not shortcut this with a spray finish unless the property is empty and spray masking is practical.

For a complete staircase project including walls and ceiling, see our staircase painting page.

Painted Wood Furniture and Fitted Units

Timber furniture — wardrobes, chests, alcove shelving, kitchen tables — can be painted as an alternative to replacement. The result depends entirely on preparation: furniture needs to be clean, lightly sanded to remove sheen from previous finish coats, and primed on any bare areas.

We paint alcove shelving units, fitted wardrobes, and freestanding timber furniture as part of interior decoration projects. For kitchen cabinets and units, see our kitchen cabinet painting page.

Timber Panelling and Exterior Woodwork

Timber Panelling

Timber panelling — tongue-and-groove, shiplap, or flat MDF panels — is increasingly common as a wall finish in hallways, living rooms, and home offices across Preston. Painted correctly, it gives a strong visual result and is durable.

MDF panels require a specialist MDF primer or oil-based primer before emulsion or eggshell topcoats. Applying standard emulsion directly to bare MDF raises the grain and leaves a rough, uneven surface. We paint panelling as part of complete room decoration projects, or as a standalone wall finish project.

Exterior Fencing and Garden Timber

Fencing, garden gates, pergolas, and timber structures in Preston’s back gardens need weather-resistant coatings to survive Lancashire’s high annual rainfall. Untreated or inadequately coated garden timber darkens, cracks, and begins to rot at joints.

We apply wood preservative stains and protective treatments to fencing and garden timber. These penetrate the wood rather than sitting as a surface film — unlike topcoat paints, they do not peel or blister on outdoor timber exposed to seasonal movement.

For decking, see our deck painting and staining page. For garden sheds, see our shed painting page.

Our Wood Painting Process

1. Free Quote

We visit your property to assess the woodwork, discuss paint choices, and give you a full written quote before any work begins.

2. Surface Assessment

We check the condition of all timber surfaces — noting areas of flaking paint, bare wood, dents, and nail holes — and agree the preparation scope with you.

3. Preparation

All surfaces are cleaned, sanded, and filled. Bare or stripped areas receive a suitable primer. This stage determines the quality of the final finish.

4. Priming and Undercoat

We apply primer to all bare areas and, where required, a full undercoat across the woodwork. This builds the foundation for a hard, even topcoat.

5. Topcoats Applied

We apply oil-based eggshell or water-based satinwood depending on the project. Two topcoats are standard. We allow full drying time between coats.

6. Final Inspection

We walk through the finished work with you, touch up any areas as needed, and leave every room clean and tidy before we go.

Wood Painting Costs in Preston

Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 01772 211 886 for a precise quote.

Interior Woodwork Costs

Single room woodwork — skirting, architraves, door frame: £150–£300. Whole-house interior woodwork: £600–£1,400. Staircase bannister and spindles: £250–£550.

Fitted alcove shelving or wardrobe: £180–£400. Timber panelling for one wall: £150–£350.

Exterior Timber Costs

Exterior fence run: £15–£30 per panel, depending on condition and the number of preparation coats required.

Factors That Affect Cost

Condition. Original Victorian skirting boards with many paint layers require more preparation — strip, fill, sand — than newer woodwork in good condition.

Profile complexity. Deep moulded profiles on period skirting and architraves take longer to paint cleanly than plain modern sections. Access. Staircase spindles and high handrails require working from ladders, which slows the work.
