Why Hallway Painting Requires a Specialist
Hallways are harder to paint than most rooms. Narrow width, heavy daily traffic, and — in Preston’s Victorian terraces — ceiling heights of 9 to 11 feet create conditions that punish shortcuts.

Stairwells Are the Most Demanding Part
Rose Decor carry specialist access equipment for the tall, steep stairwells common in Deepdale, Plungington, and Frenchwood. A standard ladder isn’t adequate or safe. DIY attempts often end with uneven coverage at height — or worse.
Older Properties Need Careful Assessment
Pre-1980 homes in Ashton-on-Ribble and the PR2 postcode may contain lead paint that needs proper containment before any new painting begins. As experienced interior painters, we identify and handle this correctly on every job.
High Traffic Means Fast Wear
High foot traffic means marks accumulate fast. The wrong finish and you’re repainting within the year.
What’s Included
Rose Decor’s hallway painting service covers the full job — not just the walls. Every project includes thorough preparation and all associated woodwork unless you specify otherwise.
Surface Preparation
We clean all surfaces, fill cracks and plaster damage, sand and prime as required, and contain any lead paint in pre-1980 properties.
Floor and Furniture Protection
Professional dust sheets and corridor runners throughout. Individual step protection on staircases. Carpets vacuumed at completion and left exactly as found.
Woodwork and Detail
Skirting boards, door frames, and doors painted in gloss or satinwood. We work carefully around period features including picture rails, dado rails, and coving. Two coats of wall paint with proper drying time between.

Our Painting Process
Step 1 — Assessment
We visit, measure the hallway, assess ceiling height and lighting, and identify any surface issues including potential lead paint in older properties.
Step 2 — Preparation
All surfaces cleaned, filled, and sanded. Primer applied where required. In Victorian terraces with steep staircases, specialist access equipment is set up before painting begins.
Step 3 — Protection
Floors, carpets, and furniture fully protected using corridor runners, step covers, and taped dust sheets. Lighting set up to ensure even coverage across the full hallway length.
Step 4 — Painting
Wall paint applied in sections to avoid lap marks — particularly important in long Victorian corridors. Two coats of eggshell or satin are standard, with full drying time between coats. Woodwork painted separately in gloss or satinwood.
Step 5 — Inspection and Clean-Up
We inspect the full job and complete any touch-ups. All protection removed carefully, the hallway vacuumed, and the space left ready to use. Most Preston hallway projects complete in one to three days.

Small Victorian Terrace Hallway
Typical range: £300–£400. Narrow corridors with standard ceiling heights.
Standard Hallway Without Stairs
Typical range: £300–£600. Walls, woodwork, and ceiling included in most quotes.
Larger Semi-Detached with Stairs and Landing
Typical range: £600–£900. Price is affected by ceiling height, surface condition, and the extent of woodwork included.
All quotes cover labour, premium paint, full surface preparation, and complete floor and furniture protection. Rose Decor provide a workmanship warranty on all hallway painting.
Paint Finish: Why We Recommend Eggshell
Rose Decor use eggshell or satin on hallway walls in 90% of Preston projects. Matt paint absorbs marks and can’t be wiped clean — in a hallway, it shows every scuff within weeks. Eggshell has a subtle sheen that reflects light in naturally dark spaces.
Dulux Easycare
Stain-repellent; removes marks months after painting. Ideal for busy family hallways.
Crown Hall & Stairs
Engineered for heavy-use areas, tougher than standard emulsion. Our most popular choice for staircase painting projects.
Johnstone’s Acrylic Eggshell
Reliable professional finish, excellent washability. For ceiling painting — including tall stairwell ceilings in Victorian terraces — we use matt paint, as ceilings don’t need the same washability as walls.

Colour Recommendations by Property Type
Rose Decor match palettes to the specific characteristics of your home.
Victorian Terraces
Narrow, tall hallways — typically 9 to 11 feet — often dark due to small front windows and a north-facing aspect. Warm tones are essential. We commonly use Farrow & Ball Pointing or Dulux Natural Calico on the upper walls.
Many Victorian hallways have original picture rails and dado rails — a darker tone below the dado and lighter above creates a grounding effect that suits the period.
Edwardian Semis
Wider than Victorian terraces with better natural light. Colours must work across sightlines into the living room.
Dulux Polished Pebble and Crown Linen White coordinate well with period woodwork. Farrow & Ball Railings as an accent wall works well in these larger spaces.
1930s Semis
Good proportions, often with parquet or quarry tile floors. Mid-tone neutrals complement existing floor materials. Dulux Chic Shadow and Crown Soft Truffle both hide everyday wear in busy family homes.

Post-War Estates
Lower 8-foot ceilings suit practical finishes over dramatic colours. Crown Paperwhite or Dulux Natural Hessian give a fresh result without making low ceilings feel compressed.
Modern Developments
Open-plan entries where the hallway flows into living spaces mean colour choices can’t be made in isolation. We consult on how the hallway tone reads against adjacent rooms. Dulux Natural Hessian and Crown Paperwhite coordinate across most modern layouts.
Mill Conversion Flats
Exposed brick and industrial-era details suit strong, deep tones. Farrow & Ball Downpipe and Little Greene Basalt are our most requested choices in this property type.
