Why Professional Wall Painters Make the Difference

The wrong paint on the wrong surface fails within months. We diagnose the wall type first — then match the system to what it actually needs.

Preston’s Varied Housing Stock

Preston’s housing spans three centuries. Lime plaster, cement render, plasterboard, and brick all behave differently. They need different primers and topcoats. Getting this wrong means peeling, damp patches, and costly rework.

Professional Standards

Our painters carry public liability insurance and use trade-quality paints from Dulux Trade and Crown Trade.

Surface-First Approach

We diagnose the wall type first — then match the paint system to what it actually needs. No guesswork, no shortcuts.

For rooms with a statement wall in a contrasting colour or texture, see our feature wall painting page.

Our 6-Step Wall Painting Process

1. Wall Assessment

We inspect every wall: surface type, existing paint condition, cracks, damp, and lead paint risk. Preston’s mix of eras means this step shapes the entire job.

2. Protection and Preparation

Furniture and floors covered. Holes filled, rough spots sanded, walls cleaned of dirt, mould, or grease. In pre-1970s homes, we test for lead paint before any sanding or stripping — lead dust is a health hazard.

3. Repair and Treatment

Cracks filled with the right material for the wall type. Lime-compatible filler for lime plaster. Flexible filler for render. Damp-affected areas treated and dried fully. Mould killed with biocide before painting.

4. Priming

New plaster gets a mist coat or stabilising primer. Lime plaster gets a breathable primer. Stained or problematic walls get a stain-blocking primer. Skipping primer causes patchy coverage and early failure.

5. Paint Application

Two coats minimum. Edges cut in first, then filled by roller or brush. Wet-edge technique prevents lap marks. Stairwells and awkward areas handled with the right access equipment.

6. Final Inspection and Handover

We inspect every area before packing up. Thin patches touched up on the spot. Full clean-up included. We show you the finished walls before we leave.

Interior Wall Painting in Preston

Preston’s housing stock spans three centuries, and each era uses different wall materials. We match the paint system to the wall type — not the other way around.

Victorian and Edwardian Lime Plaster Walls

Over 60% of Preston’s housing is Victorian or Edwardian — terrace streets across Ribbleton, Ashton, and the city centre. These properties have lime plaster walls, which are breathable by nature.

The most common mistake is sealing them with modern vinyl emulsion. Rose Decor uses breathable paint systems — mineral or silicate-based paints — that let the wall regulate moisture.

Post-War Cement and Gypsum Plaster Walls

Post-war estates across Ingol, Ribbleton, and Penwortham typically have cement-based undercoats with gypsum finish plaster. Standard PVA priming works well on new or repaired areas.

Older estates can show surface salts (efflorescence) from historic damp — these must be removed and sealed before painting.

Modern Plasterboard Walls

New-build areas such as Cottam, Longton, and newer Fulwood developments typically have smooth plasterboard partitions. Fresh plasterboard is highly absorbent and soaks up paint unevenly without proper priming.

Rose Decor applies a mist coat — diluted emulsion — as a first coat to seal the board, followed by two full coats of trade emulsion.

For Victorian and Edwardian homes with heritage requirements, see our interior painting page.

Finish Types: Choosing the Right Sheen

Rose Decor will advise on the right finish for each room. Here are the three main options.

Matt Emulsion

Flat, non-reflective finish. Hides surface imperfections well. Best for living rooms and bedrooms where a calm, even appearance is wanted.

Eggshell

Slight sheen with more washability than matt. Suits hallways, kitchens, and high-traffic areas where walls need regular cleaning.

Silk Emulsion

Mid-sheen and easy to wipe clean. Popular in bathrooms and children’s rooms.

Exterior Wall Painting in Preston

Lancashire receives around 1,200mm of rainfall per year. Exterior paint systems need to handle sustained moisture, freeze-thaw cycles, and wind-driven rain.

Weather-Rated Paint Systems

We plan exterior projects around weather windows and use paint systems rated for the North West climate. Silicone-modified masonry paints and elastomeric coatings stay flexible, water-repellent, and breathable through temperature cycles.

Surfaces We Cover

We cover painted brick, pebbledash, and cement render. For all exterior masonry surfaces — including specialist coatings and textured finishes — see our masonry painters page.

Conservation Areas

Properties in Winckley Square and Avenham conservation areas may require planning approval before painting exterior surfaces. We flag this upfront so there are no surprises.

For dedicated ceiling painting — including Artex, coving, and stain-blocking — we offer a separate service.

Areas We Serve

We serve Preston and the surrounding areas.

Rose Decor provides professional wall painting across Preston, Fulwood, Ribbleton, Cottam, Deepdale, Avenham, Winckley Square, Ashton, Ingol, Penwortham, and Longton.

Whether you need interior walls painted in a Victorian terrace or exterior masonry on a modern detached home, we cover all areas of Preston and Lancashire.
