Preston Living Rooms: Property Types and Challenges
Preston’s housing stock is unusually varied. Each property type brings its own painting challenges.

Victorian Terraces (PR1, PR2)
Victorian terraces make up 40.4% of Preston’s homes — nearly double the UK average. Living rooms typically have 9-11ft ceilings, original cornicing, and bay windows with angled return walls.
Cutting in around bay windows and alcoves beside chimney breasts requires experienced decorators who know how to price and prepare these features accurately.
Edwardian Semis (Fulwood, Ashton-on-Ribble)
Edwardian semis in Fulwood and Ashton-on-Ribble often have 10-12ft ceilings and substantial picture rails. Where original lime plaster survives, it needs breathable paint rather than modern vinyl emulsion. We identify plaster type at the initial consultation so the right product is specified from the start.
Georgian Town Houses (Winckley Square)
The Georgian terraces around Winckley Square have the tallest ceilings and the most detailed plasterwork in Preston. These rooms need additional time for preparation and cutting-in. We carry out a detailed survey before quoting so there are no surprises.
1930s Semis (Fulwood, Ingol, Penwortham)
These properties have lower ceilings — typically 8-9ft — and rectangular room layouts. Many have artex ceilings or woodchip wallpaper that needs addressing before any paint goes on.
Post-War and Modern Developments (Ribbleton, Cottam)
Post-war homes have smooth-plastered walls and standard 8ft ceilings. Modern open-plan spaces in Cottam require careful colour planning to maintain flow between living and dining zones. North-facing rooms benefit from warmer tones — earthy neutrals, soft terracottas, warm clays — to counteract Preston’s frequently overcast skies.
Whatever your property type, we assess walls, ceilings, and woodwork at the consultation so every detail is accounted for in your quote.
What’s Included in Your Living Room Painting Service
Every job includes:
Surface Preparation and Premium Paint
Full surface preparation: filling cracks, sanding, priming patched areas. Two coats minimum on all walls using premium trade paint (Dulux, Johnstone’s Trade, or Farrow & Ball). Heavy-duty floor protection and quality cotton dust sheets throughout.
Woodwork and Feature Walls
Woodwork finishing: skirting boards, door frames, window trim, and coving in satin or gloss. For feature wall painting, we use specialist techniques to create depth without overwhelming the room. Alcoves beside chimney breasts — common in Preston’s Victorian and Edwardian terraces — are measured and quoted separately for accuracy.
Full Interior Painting Services
Ask about our full interior painting service if you’re refreshing more than one room. See our wall painting page for specialist wall finishes, or explore ceiling painting if your ceilings need attention too.

Every quote includes premium trade materials, labour, surface preparation, furniture protection, and full cleanup.

Our Living Room Painting Process
Step 1: Free Consultation and Colour Advice
We visit your home, assess walls and woodwork, and test paint samples in your actual lighting. We work around your existing furniture, flooring, and curtains.
Step 2: Preparation
We move and protect large furniture, electronics, and flooring. Filling, sanding, and priming all happen before any paint is applied. This stage isn’t rushed — poorly prepared walls show through even premium paint.
Step 3: First and Second Coats
All walls get a minimum of two coats. Feature walls and darker colours may need three for an even finish. We maintain clean edges at coving, skirting, and door frames throughout.
Step 4: Woodwork and Detailing
Skirting boards, door frames, window trim, and coving are finished in satin or gloss. For Victorian and Edwardian properties, we match original woodwork profiles where possible.
Step 5: Completion and Cleanup
Once the final coat is dry, we walk through the room with you. Furniture is returned to position and all waste removed. You can use the room that evening — wait 24-48 hours before pushing furniture flush against walls.
